Thanks to [link] for making the original available for me to alter.
Some programs, like LogonStudio or LogonVista, can change the login screen for you. If you don't have one of these, here's how to do it manually (Windows 7 Only):
Launch the Registry by holding Windows and R. Type regedit.exe into the box.
Make your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Current Version\ Authentication\ LogonUI\ Background.
In here you will find a key called OEMBackground. (If there isn't one, make it yourself.) That key is set to 0. Change it to 1.
Close the Registry.
Pick your image. It has to be a JPG; it has to be the exact same resolution as your monitor; and it also has to be less than 256kb. (I've done all the known display resolutions here except for 2560x1440 and 2560x1600. Both impossible, as the source material was only 1920x1200.)
Go to the ‘C\ Windows\ System32\ oobe\ info\ backgrounds’ folder.
If there isn’t such a folder, make it yourself.
Save your image in there, as backgroundDefault.jpg.
Next time you log out, there it is!
(Sometimes it forgets at first; you may have to repeat the Registry procedure again.)
I'm trying to use LogonStudio but it doesn't replace it for me. Not even the default ones work. I've tried running it as administrator, still doesn't. Can you help me with this? Because I don't trust myself to muck around in the registry. I've broken things that way.
Sorry, LogonStudio and the Registry procedure outlined above are the only two ways I know.
Apart from hacking the imageres.dll file if you have the software for it. That's how I do it... but I have also changed the login sound and half of the icons. I don't know if it's worth doing that if all you want to do is change the login screen, especially as you'd have to back up everything first of course using something like Norton Ghost or equivalent.
Bah, that's alright. I had a close call of breaking my desktop trying to use an external montior. Stupid HP computers, break when you try to do what they're made to do...
So I'm not going to do anything risky for a long time lol
only this one C/Windows/System32/oobe/
maybe I should make folder named "info" and inside it is the "backround" folder.. is this the right way?
I'm sorry but your instruction above is not clear to me..
